Posted 05 February 2008 - 06:41 PM by 'COOPS' for me this weekend was almost a home coming, having lived and worked at butlins' for a few years in the late 80s.like so many people before me it was working here that brought me to skegness in the first place. the weekend itself is not specifically a northern soul weekend, it's a soul weekend of infinite variety, but, amongst this melting pot of all that's soul is a venue called 'crazy horse' that served up a plethora of northern soul all weekend in the past there had been an over spill of 'non-northern soul fans to this venue late in the evenings but, entertainments boss willie lee and northern soul promoter/dee-jay dave raistrick put on a second room with a more commercial slant to appease those who some may term as 'handbaggers' this being so the crazy horse was full of northern soul officianados with very few 'handbaggers', and those that did appear may have entered the venue as 'handbaggers' but i feel left it at the end of the night with an appreciation of northern soul no rare soul as such, not here, not this weekend. it's butlins' and the emphasis is on dancing and having a damned good time a great selection of dee-jays including the double-decking team of the decade 'tats' taylor and chris forest, there was even a two hour triple decking session from the EASC, of martin stanford, marcus reid and mick cooper from the city club's hey days in the city of peterborough. pete taylor, ian seaman, nick borst, doug hall, andy jackson, steve austin, ian gee and many others were there simply to facilitate the good times and the dancing an excellent weekend, my only small criticism would be (and this was echoed by many i spoke to) often a record (be it moses smith, frankie and johnny or any of a dozen others) were played three or four times in a night. not good and i feel the dee-jays should really try to avoid this, i've seen their record boxes, most brought over 200 records to a session so there is really no excuse other than 1) not knowing what went on before them or 2) laziness. would i go again? yes, most certainly, no politics, no formality just northern soul, a dance floor, some friends and a bar... hi-di-high? not arf!!

Posted 06 February 2008 - 01:03 AM by 'MAARK' Had a brilliant time as ever. I like going in the other rooms and seeing how the other half live which then makes the Northern Soul room seem like cutting edge. Almost 5,000 people there this weekend! For me, my five sisters and my brother in law, it's the closest we've got to having a holiday together as we couldn't afford them when we were kids. My sides still hurt from laughing and my feet from dancing. I know it's not hard core Northern soul, but it's certainly hard core fun! Already booked in for next year!
