Fantasy Island Motown and Soul Festival:

Can't say a lot about the Friday as I couldn't stay long. Having never heard Angelo Starr I was quite disappointed to miss him and I have never heard a duff note from the 'Team'.

Saturday afternoon was very much a chill-session and very enjoyable, music not turned up too loud to drown out conversation.

Saturday evening (for me) was an unexpected success. Let me qualify this by saying I used to work at Fanny Island and never envisaged I'd attend a Northern event there. (when I worked there it was during my twelve years absence from a scene I thought had long died.)

But success it was and I feel a foundation stone for future events that will most certainly be very well attended and appreciated.

Didn't stay for the 'nighter (mainly because 'Sam', who I do have a lot of respect for, in my opinion was blowing 'cold' as in "Sometimes he can blow hot or cold").

Excellent venue for the potentiality of a regular all-nighter but I feel that 'nighter dee-jays' would need to be chosen for their ability to serve up the type of tunes 'nighter goers would demand which, as many of us know are not necessarily the same tunes that are delivered with a sometimes tedious regularity at 'Soul Nights'.

Highlight for me (other than seeing Jimmy James perform once more) was 'Tats' and Forrest's journey to the 'Dance-floor-filler-box' of tunes.

The mark of a couple of great dee-jays, the tunes they played were so far removed from their preferred sets that I never expected to hear them played by this oldish but none-the-less dynamic duo, but they were played because the 'floor' demanded them so well done guys. (any chance of a playlist Andrew?).
Couldn't make the Sunday sessions either because of a prior arrangement so sorry couldn't be more in depth.

Keep an eye out for future events here, as long as the dee-jay rosta is kept fresh and not just a carbon copy of the already established Skeggy Weekender and Butlins' then I believe 'Fanny Island' (as us locals call it) may well be here to stay.

For all those out there that appreciate a bit of irony (as I do) I seem to remember that this venue is on the same piece of ground (but since then redeveloped) that Dave Raistrick, Mick Smith (of Mick and Mo fame) and Paul Mackenzie (all of whom dee-jayed at this weekender) first started playing Northern Soul on their 'mobile soul disco' way back in the early 70s (although I'm sure I'll be corrected, I usually am!!!)

i gotta agrre coops, this could really work as a niter venue, but for me its was too many oldies in the northern room. so like you said the choice of dj's could make this work.

Like to add my feedback of our time at Fantasy Island. We were disappointed to find the Northern room was more a glorified bar than a proper function room. It did have a wooden dance floor but this kind of ran along side the bar and it was difficult to create an atmosphere because of the lighting. Not many punters, 50 - 60 at most, and went very quiet when the group came on in the main room. Saving grace imho was a quality 2 hrs from Messrs Rix and Smudge.

I really don't think this is the right venue for an All-Nighter as others have suggested. In fact a few of the Niter crowd who were there, left to go to SixHills. To be fair we left at 2 when the proceedings moved to the Main Room after the Motown/Classic Soul night had finished but even this had a temporary dance floor and because of all the lighting behind the stage seemed a bit more like a circus ring than a Northern Room! OK, they may have turned the lights down after we left but unless more people turned up later it must have been really quiet.

We left rather disillusioned, someone went with us who was experiencing Northern Soul for the first time and although she enjoyed the music and watching the dancing, thought the venue lacked soul...

I Would just like to thank each and every one who attended the first ever "Soul & Motown" event at "Fantasy Island" to ALL the DJs and the fabulous live performance from Angelo Starr & Jimmy James, you really had the place cookin' - Lots of positive comment and many asking when the next event will take place..........So watch this space, Manifesto mag, Blues & Soul, Echoes and Solar Radio for dates in 2010.

Hey Mark,

Thanks for the comments both positive and negative and sorry that as an allnighter it didn't hit the spot from your point of view. It really helps knowing where and how we can improve the venue/event for the future and for that l thank you.

Many Thanks

Dave Raistrick

Didn't we have a lovely time the days we went to fantasy Island. The chocks were definately off well chilled all weekend. music was just what the crowd wanted and everybody had a fun time Franky. Them magic jugs of larger that just kept filling themselves up. If this is on in 2010 book it in your diaries as it's just a fab weekend of good company with good music, good organisation at a good price. Can you really not go? see you all there , and if you want a great hotel for a unbelievable price pm me, Elnel ,Jean, Yocky, and myself really had a ball the whole weekend.

Thank you to Dave and Donna for all the hard work, it paid off this will be a big one.
