WELL I JUST CAN`T BELIEVE NOBODY HAS STARTED A THREAD FOR SKEGGY WEEKENDER? LOOKS LIKE IT`S DOWN TO ME THEN?

ARRIVED AT DIGS LATER THAN USUAL SO DROPPED BAGS IN THE ROOM & OUT FOR A QUICK BITE, BACK FOR QUICK SHOWER & A SLURP IN THE BAR & ONTO THE GROSVENOR ABOUT 8.30.FIRST HOUR OR SO VERY QUITE EVEN UPSTAIRS IN MAIN ROOM BUT THAT JUST MEANS MORE ROOM AT BAR & MORE ROOM TO DANCE  SO WE WERE HAPPY ENOUGH.
BY 10.30 THE PLACE WAS CHOCKER & BUZZING & WHEN I VENTURED UP TO THE NORTHERN ROOM TO THE BAR & FRIENDS IT WAS A STRUGGLE TO GET TO THE BAR(LANDLORD WILL BE HAPPY) & THE FLOOR WAS PACKED WITH BODIES. DOWN IN THE VAULTS WITH MICK H, SOUL SAM ETC IT WAS JUST AS GOOD IF NOT EVEN BETTER (BEST NIGHT IMO) & OVER THE ENTIRE WEEKEND I HEARD (IMO, NOT SAYING WHO?) ONLY 1 POOR SET. SOUL SAM HELD OUT TILL 2.30 BUT THEN IT WAS OVER SO BACK TO THE DIGS FOR A CHILL & A CHAT WITH MY MATE "NELL" WHO ENTERTAINED THE NOTTS LADS, "TOMMY" & HIS MATES FOR THE 30MINS OR SO BEFORE HITTING THE SACK.

SATURDAY CALLED IN FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS IN AFTERNOON & AFTER A KIP AT TEATIME IT WAS BACK FOR MORE OF THE SAME, WHICH WAS JUST ABOUT AS GOOD AS FRIDAY. THIS TIME THE PLACE WAS BUSIER AS IT APPEARS A LOT TURN UP FOR SATURDAY NIGHT ONLY. THIS UPPED THE TEMPERATURE SOMEWHAT, IT WAS WARM DOWNSTAIRS BUT UPSTAIRS IT WAS SWELTERING & OH HOW THEY LOVED IT . FAR TO SOON IT WAS ALL OVER AGAIN & A SHORT JIG BACK TO THE DIGS FOR MORE ENTERTAINMENT WITH "NELL" & HEADS DOWN AGAIN.

SUNDAY MORNING A STROLL DOWN TO DAVE & DONNA`S 60`S COFFEE BAR, CABARET PROVIDED BY ROGER BANKS ESQ, THEN A LAST COUPLE OF HOURS WITH FRIENDS AT VENUE BEFORE THE LONG TREK HOME. THIS LAST DAY AT THE PROMS INCLUDED SNOWY DRESSING AS A WOMAN AGAIN(THATS 3RD TIME IN 2 WEEKS BILL, I`M WORRIED) FOR THE RAFFLE, THEN HIM WHEELING THE PIANO ONTO DANCEFLOOR TO DO AN IMPERSONATION OF MONYT PYTHONS "NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT" WITH HIS TROLLEYS ROUND HIS ANKLES & Y FRONTS BLOWING IN THE BREEZE .NOT TO BE OUTDONE YOCKY & STEVE FOSTER DISROBED TALCED DOWN & DECIDED TO WRESTLE (NICE), MUSICAL CHAIRS NEXT & FINALLY YOCKY TRYING TO OUT DANCE SAM EVANS  , NOT A CHANCE M8, BY THE WAY SAM NICE SPOT SUNDAY AFTERNOON . SO A GOOD LAUGH TO END THE WEEKEND WAS HAD BY ALL.

IT WAS GREAT TO MEET MORE NEW FACES; TOMMY & M8`S, WILLIE & SUE, ANDY CANNON (DVD ON IT`S WAY) & BLAST FROM THE PAST "STIGGER", ALSO NICE THAT DAVE RAISTRICK FINALLY REMEMBERED WHO I WAS!! TERRIBLE THING MEMORY LOSS DAVE, OUR AGE, I KNOW.

TAKE CARE & BE SAFE,
SPOT.

Have to say........what a weekend that was. Totally agree with whats been said. We (Tommy and us Notts lads, Garry Cogs and Mazzy) packed us bags on Sunday morning only to re-book the hotel. get unpacked again and carry on the good times. Well done to Dave, a great weekend and although Sunday at Wolfies started a bit slow it was 100mph by the time it finished at 2am. Back at the digs landlord left out even more Bud was feeling abligded to drink it stayed up for another hour!!!!

Would of started this thread but still got the shakes

See you all in September

Keep the faith

Well it’s took me all this time to do a Skegness write up, due to the fact that when I come back down to reality and have to live on the normal planet I get a big fat miserable head on for a few days and don’t want to talk to the world! Not helping with the fact my teenage kids managed to get me a nice virus on my pc while I was away! Was I happy, NO! I've tried posting this lot 3 times now, so if it appears again and again,,,don't read it again!

I expected a few more write ups about this weekend before now, with such a low amount of events talk comments on this thread it could make you lot think it’s not a good weekend, maybe the Skegness lot don’t come on Soul-Source.

Well here goes, my account of the weekend, warts and all…..

Arrived at Skegness Thursday night about 8’ish, off to the digs, dumped our bags, found I’d forgot to pack my hairdryer, so I was in for a bad hair weekend, good job there was a bit of a breezy wind in Skeg! We met Pete Taylor, Steve Brown and their wives from Annesley Welfare, and a couple of others in Wolfies. Had found out Wolfies was now a no smoking pub, mmmm, could prove difficult. A good old natter all night and a laugh made us forget about smoking. 5 pints later, back to the digs to get up early to be at The Grosvenor for a 12 oclock kick off. Bring it on!

Woke with no hangover, now that’s a first, and off to the Grosvenor with JMTYGs records all ready for his first spot. The equipment was still being set up. Jim getting a bit worried, his allocated hour spot nearly over while the decks were being set up. Wolfies was also having a warm up session for the early birds, and Donna was in Stars & Stripes café making coffee for the rest with soul music playing in the background, the Soul Café of Skegness. With all this going off, folks were scattered across Skegness and the Vault was pretty empty. Roger Banks was there setting up his sales boxes, along with Steve Jeffries. Dave Raistrick suffering in silence from a nasty allergic reaction to some deodorant body spray and he was walking like the Rhinestone Cowboy while nursing swollen body parts awww. Just what you don’t need being the promoter.

On with the show, JMTYG to the decks, he still had his hour, yipeee, and started with one of my favourite songs, Chuck Jackson – I’m A Little Bit Stronger, it sounded bloody great. He played a great spot, well I would say that wouldn’t I ? ;-) His hour spot nearly over, and none of the other DJ’s who usually play in the Vault during Friday afternoon had turned up, or bothered to turn up ;-)….Dave Raistrick said “Keep  We had 3 odd hours of someJplaying until the next DJ arrives”. Great  great tunes from Jim because no other DJ arrived, 3 hours is a long time for one DJ, the boy must have stamina ;-) Good job Roger had taken Jims 200 box to Skeg in the car and handed them over. Roger Banks kept us company. A few soulies wandered in and out all afternoon. I asked Roger if he’d got anything good, cheap and something I’d not heard before in his sales boxes I could get Jim to put on the decks. No crowd to play too as such, so the decks came in handy for a listen out loud to a few of Rogers sales. He knows my taste in music “ Find me a record Roger”! On goes Rogers choice for two or three records, which made my purse open, and I bought a record off him. Promising myself I wouldn’t buy a record …. Yeah well, it was only £15.Roger provided the entertainment in the form of a few backdrops, spins, and handclapping, Mr Wigan Casino Dancer circa 1976, well done Roger, didn’t think you still had it in you ;-) Sorry to hear you suffered with a bad back for most of the weekend awwww. You’ll never learn!

Mick H turned up, Where is everybody ? Mmm, no idea Mick, want to play a few tunes ? Naghhh he said. He was doing his spot late Saturday night and catching a plane to Finland to DJ there. 3.45pm Jim stopped playing, we wrapped things up and headed off to the pub with Roger & Mick for something to eat. What chocolate fudge cake ? Oink oink. Mick went to the loo, followed by Roger, when they returned Roger was laughing, something about cracking gay jokes in the loo to Mick, wonder what other men in the loo thought of those pair eh. If anyone hears any gossip along the grapevine about Roger and Mick being gay, it’s not true…so they tell me ;-)

Night time arrives, walking down Skeggy seafront, to find a tribute band playing in Whisky A Go Go, Noasis, Oasis Tribute band, so we spent an hour or more in there listening to the band before getting to The Grosvenor. 3 of us watching Noasis, us being the oldest swingers in town in Whisky a Go Go. I walked over to take a few pics, and the crowd parted to let me through. 3 of us went to see them, sure the crowd thought we were talent spotters! An hour or two watching Noasis, well it didn’t matter we were missing the soul, we’d got all weekend and it was good to catch up on a bit of chat with Chris we don’t get to see that often. Got to the Grosvenor, phew it was a bit warm. Not so many there for the Friday which made getting to the bar a lot easier. There was a fair few upstairs dancing away. We made our way to Rogers sales tables for a natter, or to keep him out of trouble because Mrs Jen wasn’t getting to Skeg until Saturday to reign him in lol. Got yakking to Mick & Little Mo. I think I talked Mo’s ears off, you would have thought two women would have spent most of the night talking hair, clothes and make-up, no, not us pair, it was records and music, how sad lol. I woke up in the morning sounding like a Billy Goat Gruff, no voice hardly, and I blamed Mo! Think it was the 10 odd pints of lager I’d drank throughout the day that made me chatty, soz Mo ;-) It might have been more then 10, who’s counting ?

Saturday morning, no hangover, what do they put in the Grosvenor beer ?? No hangover ??? Crikey. Usually have my head down the toilet for most of Saturday morning. Called in Dave Raistricks newly opened Café, sitting outside cracking jokes about being Paul Weller and Mick Talbot in the Style Council. Smart Café indeed. Inside the café was solid with people, and Donna was rushed off her feet, and running out of cups and saucers fast! She had “Bribed” some fella to help wash the pots, well she must have bribed him good and proper with all the pots he had to wash. I did recommend Fairy to keep his hands soft.

Headed off back down to the Grosvenor, Jim was playing the first spot, doubling up with Roger Banks. Again, some great tunes from both of them, right up my street. Comes the end of their spot, 12.50, and Roger being Roger decided it would be fun to tell the next DJ, Roy B, that it was only 12.40, seeing Roger turn his watch back 10 minutes, I did the same, so did Jim. Roy asking “what time is it am I nearly on ?” Naghh mate, its only 12.40. Time now says 12.50 on our watches, Roy gets a bit impatient, his watch says 1pm. Di, what time is it ? Ten to 1 Roy, I know a song about that, and I sang Ten to One, he’ll be with you tonight, ten to one, I’ll cry with all my might….. I think Roy was beginning to twig on, tapping his watch as if to say Oh my watch has broke. Roy stood there for 10 minutes with his Ann Heyward, Crook His Little Finger on his finger ready to play, don’t know about Crook His Little Finger, more like Cramp His Little Finger lol. Roger and Jim played 3 or 4 more tracks, real time 1.05 and Roy went on. We stayed in the Vault for most of the afternoon, and had the last hour or so upstairs talking in the bar.

Off out Saturday for a bite to eat with Roger & Jen, Andy Riley & Deb. Arrived at Wetherspoons to find no table big enough for 6 of us. So Roger did his removal man impression and arranged the pub to suit. More chocolate fudge cake for Roger, who I must say, looks very attractive with it stuck on the end of his nose. He should enrol himself in the Barmy Army lol.

Back out for the night time session, got there early to get a seat in the Vault. Stigger and his mate Brendan did the first spot, played some great stuff, forgotten oldies, some 100mph stuff which really got us in the mood for a good old dance. Stigger loving every minute of his spot, passion coming out of the top of his head. Don’t you just love to see a DJ enjoying it as much as the rest of the crowd eh. Chatting, shuffling and foot tapping for an hour or two, then Roger did his spot, the beer kicking in and I was ready for a dance. I was on the dance floor getting a bit sweaty and trying to stand upright, new leather soled shoes and a polished floor makes dancing a bit treacherous, add on a few pints of beer and it’s lethal. But I managed to keep my dignity somehow. Arthur Fenn next, he played some blinders! Great spot. Johnny Rogers – Make a Change, sadly only 3 of us on the dance floor to it, why ?? I think I danced to half a dozen or so records on a trot at one time, so unlike me these days! It must have been a good couple of hours from Arthur and Roger to make my arse get out my chair. I went upstairs to the bar to be greeted with The Snake, and while being served on came some other commercial stuff, Elgins – Heaven Must Have Sent You, I didn’t see who was DJ’ing at the time. Glad I was a permanent resident in the Vault phewwwy lol. It wasn’t Heaven who had sent me upstairs, it was the need for a pint! Soul Sam came on in the Vault at 1.30, we had half an hour listening to him, and left the Vault after having a long day to get some sleep all ready for Sunday, Sunday was going to be Party Day for us seeing as Jim had decided he wanted Sunday off DJ’ing. I did hear along the grapevine that Andy Riley and a few others got Roy B with the watch joke again Saturday night, and he fell for it 2nd time around. Thanks for being so sporting Roy hahaha.

Jim got up before me on the Sunday, I was chilling and thought I’d take it easy. That easy I didn’t get to the Vault until about 1.15. Roger was still playing, extended spot, due to one or two DJ’s not turning up so the afternoon timetable had a bit of a shuffle round. The Vault was nearly empty, a few from the upstairs room came down for a dance. A lot of people had left to go home because of work on Monday. Mick & Mo to the decks while Roger packed his stuff away ready for the off, and then dressed himself in bits from the plastic plant that lives in the corner of the room, making himself look like a swamp monster. Roger behave yourself ;-) Never heard Mick & Mo before, maybe the odd one or two tracks from previous Skeg weekenders. Wow, they played a belter of a spot! Top class stuff. Records I’d never heard before, but believe me they were good! Deb Riley, myself, Jim, and a few from upstairs were dancing. They played the kind of stuff Rob Thomas used to play down at the Union Club a few years back. They played “Our Love Is Dying”, a Rob Thomas spin from a couple of years ago, which at the time was covered up. I asked Mo what it was, she told me, but I forgot! Hoping these pair will get a prime time spot in the future at Skeg when there’s a crowd of dancers in and a few pairs of appreciative ears to listen to what these pair have to offer. Great, just bloody great. I told them they made my weekend, they finished it off just right for me, that impressed, we went upstairs to the bar after the Vault shut, and I bought them  Any promoters outJboth a pint and said thanks. Well done you pair  there wanting something a little different from your regular boring spot DJ’s, book these pair! Shame a few more of the upstairs crowd didn’t come down for a listen to their spot, you missed a blinder. Sam Evans did a spot downstairs, due to the DJ line up having a shuffle round. On the mic she shouted “here’s one I’ve not heard all weekend down here”…..well I wonder why ? It was that bloody DJ Genesis, Tribute to Betty, oh flip me! No wonder it wasn’t heard downstairs, I doubt any DJ who played downstairs would admit to owning one lol. Heap of donkey poo!… oh well.

The Grosvenor was looking a bit bare now with folks, down to the last 100 or so of the weekend die-hards. I was getting a bit tired now after a full weekend of non-stop rushing about, and hit the dancefloor to keep myself going knowing full well I would be out for the night time session at Wolfies. God knows what I was dancing too, but I tried, if only to keep myself awake.

Out of the Grosvenor at the end, all over too quick for me this time booooo hoooo. Off to get something to eat, a change from my usual steak, I had Chicken Tikka. Not being one for foreign spicy food, it made my cheeks glow, and my eyes cry, and in turn, laugh! Sat listening to Jim talking across the table, my elbow on the table, when all of a sudden my elbow gave way, shoving a few plates and cutlery round the table in the process, which made me burst out laughing spitting rice everywhere! Can’t take me anywhere.

Back to the digs, a freshen up ready for the last session. We had a couple of hours in the B&B bar talking to a few others who stop in the same digs, about the weekend, the music, and how good it had been. We headed to Wolfies and there was still a fair few people in there. This was the wind down, time to start sulking, thinking of life back on the normal planet, mardy mardy, it was nearly over. DJ’s play all and everything in Wolfies. Last off came some commercial motown, youth club sounds, Temptations, Get Ready, and they sounded great! Found myself, along with Jim, dancing at the top of the pub like a pair of psychos thinking we were still 16. I danced that much my legs began to ache, had to dance myself through the pain barrier. Nipped outside for a smoke, and started clowning around. Infact, “Dancing in The Street” for real! Wished I had danced in the street on Friday to bed my leather soles in haha. Turned round to see Jim had jumped on a wall, and was dancing on a brick pillar! Could have done with chucking a bit of talc on it hahaha. No idea how he managed to stay up there with about 12 pints of beer in his bloodstream. I whipped my camera out and took a pic, while singing Louis Louis to him doing Jimmy out of Quadrophenia, what a nutter. I think we left there about 2am, and walked back to the digs with our chins on the floor having a mardy baby sulk because it was all over again.

Woke up Monday morning to reality, time to pack and catch the train home L

Jim will probably post the pics up later, he’s got them all on his pc.

Well done Mr Raistrick, appreciate all you do to put this weekend on, along with anyone who works behind the scenes. A great weekend had by me in the Vault, great music, great crowd, infact,,,bloody brilliant, and as Jimmy Wallace said…I’ll Be Back.

Hi Mrs Nut,
This is the first chance I've really had to sit at the computer since last weekend.
Me and Karen still feel knackered from it but really enjoyed it.
We too , prefer the Vault to upstairs but at least the weekend at skeggy caters for all tastes. Best spot of the weekend in IMO was Roger Banks on Saturday night
He played some stompin tunes

Jim did notice you kept putting your arms around Roger not quite arse lickin but who knows what goes on when you get back to the B&B. I 've found the Marv Johnson 45 looks in great shape might put it in the sales box & take it to Annesley on Saturday unless you know anybody who wants it Cressy
