Posted 30 March 2008 - 11:56 PM by 'COOPS'

Only went to the Friday evening session, the Saturday lunch/afternoon session and the ‘after-party’ at wolfies Sunday evening this time because of other commitments.
Friday evening was very well attended with a sprinkling of younger people in attendance.
Many-a-good evening builds up to the ‘big act’ or the ‘top dee jay’ but for me this night, in many ways didn’t quite follow that tried and tested formulae.
This two-roomed venue has an area called The Vault, it’s the smaller of the two rooms and the music played down there is…. How can I put this…. More progressive than the menu served upstairs in the main ballroom.
First up downstairs, if you get what I mean, was Boston’s Rupe who, for me, played one of the best sets of the whole night, this set was complimented by skegness’ own Mick and Mo.
Now, I’m not saying for one moment that I didn’t enjoy the rest of the night, because I did but… If that was the only two hours of soul that I had got to listen to all weekend I would have had my appetite for excellent soul music appeased with vigour.
I then went upstairs into the main ballroom and caught Ian ‘Gee’, Rob Smith and Pete Taylor.
These three dee jays all have my utmost respect for what they have played in the past and can play now but it seems to me that when dee-jays get behind the decks in the main room in Skegg they lose all sense of adventure and, in the main, play safe!
Now I’m not for one moment saying this is wrong, the foot falls on the dance floor will tell that it worked but I can’t help thinking that there are so many great ‘classics’ that are left in the boxes at Skegness to die of underexposure.
A whole generation of seventies classics (Oscar Perry, the Brothers etc.) hardly get a look in or even some of the eighties stuff (Alfie Davison, Jan Jones et. al) just didn’t seem to get the change of even a moments glory in the bracing Skegness air, now if these ‘oldies’ are not for the progressive ‘Vault’ (which of course they’re not,) then when and where do they come out to play?.
To digress I must say that the predominant talk of the weekend was the ‘same-old’ music being presented over and over again.
As I said earlier, the format works to a certain degree but for how long can this last.
Already people are talking about the stayed and all too familiar tunes emanating from the speakers upstairs, a bit like having your favourite sit-com being repeated on the T.V. but the programme directors only play you one episode from the series, over and over again. It will have you in stitches the first time you see it, you still may love it and enjoy a second airing but you know damned well there are plenty of other episodes they could show but just don’t!
As I said, the present formulae is working but for how long?
How long before the paying public ask to see the other episodes because, and this is a truism, “Familiarity does breed contempt”.
So, I went back downstairs to the vault in time to hear Mick ‘H’ do what he does best, play that soulful music. Had to go then, missed Soul Sam because of commitments.

I realise I was only there for part of the weekender but the opinions expressed to me were, in the main over phone calls from people who attended the whole weekend or during the evening ‘After Show Party’ event at Wolfies on Sunday. But, I must add (not just because it’s my local) I hope Skeggy can evolve and go from strength to strength because it’s one hell of a friendly weekend. I know Dave Raistrick is putting on his second ‘Upfront on the Seafront’ weekend in June, a whole progressive weekend of quality soul but I do feel a little progression in the Main Ballroom at the Grosvenor during this friendliest of weekenders is needed for it to continue being an instant calendar entry for many regulars who already attend (and to attract ‘new blood’ in this era of so many weekenders from which to chose).

A good weekend again at skeggy
Never had a bad one there, always good music wether you are up or down (if you know what i mean)
Main reason no food was laid on was because of the rancid smell it leaves in the Vault all weekend sooo many complaints in last few years had forced DR to tell owners to stop it
DR has no control over bar prices unlike some events , i thought they were reasonable, i go out to enjoy & have a beer or 3, never bothered about the price of it more worried about vinyl prices.  ian

Only there for the Saturday afternoon and night sessions, spent all the time in The Vault where we enjoyed a good mix of 60's,70's,Crossover and Modern and not an overplayed track amongst em (well maybe the odd one) so no complaints from us.
We always find at weekenders that the best music played is usually Saturday afternoon and this was no exception with a brilliant set from Roger Banks the best of the lot. Some really nice midtempo including a couple of tunes back to back from Chuck Jackson and Bobby Taylor, didn't catch the titles but top tunes and also one of my faves which you don't hear much out and about , Doug Phillips - You Really Know How To Hurt A Guy , Superb !! , nice one Roger. Also heard some good stuff from the other's including Four Wonders and Will Hatcher, both top tunes IMO.
Evening kicked off with a great double decking set mixing 60's and 70's from the S.Yorks duo of Terry Wright and Tony Wiggan and what a way to end Tony's contribution with the awesome Masqueraders - How Big Is Big , how good is that !!. After that a mixture of more well known 70's and Modern which filled the floor and got the place buzzing, particularly 2 from Michael Proctor which went down well with the crowd.
Rob Kay followed this with his usual quality mixed set which included another one of my faves San Franciscan TKO's and many others, too many to mention.
We left after Rob's spot so can't comment on Rogers or Sams later spots.

Only ventured upstairs to go to the Bar but on each visit the music reminded me why we stayed downstairs and have to say if it wasn't for The Vault we wouldn't have been there. Each to his own however and obviously the majority would disagree and I'm sure all the Main Room faithful had a superb time as we did in The Vault.

Only downside of the whole day was the 2 hour journey home in the early hours which now in hindsight we wished we had stayed over, which we will do in June for the Suncastle Upfront event.

Well done to Dave,Donna and all.

See you in June.

Paul & Sue

i would like to concur what has already been posted. Didn't venture upstairs for the first time in years(only for the beer). Thoroughly enjoyed the vault. My pick would be MICK&MO, thought the sounds they played were awesome. They deserve a late spot.

Dear Deirdre,
I feel compelled to write to you for help & advice, cos I can't help myself & I think it's an addiction, it must be!!! Taking two precious (Use 'em or lose 'em) days holidays to follow a bald bloke, his woman & child & his back window badges, in the lashing it down rain for two hours on rural roads in the wake & spray of Lorries,Van man, Sunday driver & Caravan man, to give praise & worship at the Altar of Lincolnshire Soul in the church of Reverend Raistrick & Deaconess Donna, where the Sun don't shine & it's as cold as a Penguin's ring, Skeggy, yes good old Skeggy.
Seems like there's an epidemic here & the pull is that strong we head straight to Wulfie's for a quick fix until we get a proper one later on.After this it's a quick infusion of sustenance before the 7pm kick off,as it may be the last intake of solids for a while. All are given "The Mark" on their wrists, this is for easy recognition by Rev. Raistrick & other addicts, the choice then, once in is, "Up the ladder for a hoof" or "Down, down, deeper & down" in the Vault. I flit between heaven & hell all night trying to bury my addiction through the demon drink (That's my story & I'm sticking to it,ok?)but alas to no avail, so I emerse myself as deep as I can & enjoy, what a trip it was!!
Loads of other well known faces & friends are in the same boat (We all need your help Deirdre) infact too many to mention but nice to chat with "Coops-erman" (thought he'd wrote, "Got Commited", realised it said, "Got Commitments" when I reread.) & great to see Denmac,Rob & "Our Vicky" (cd's spot on), also top South Yorkshire Sunshine Troop of Nell,Jean,Yocky,Tom & entourage.
Anyway back to the Friday night music addiction & fest, with Sam,Mick H & Mick & Mo, also Mick Bennett playing excellent sets & Mick Moylan totally suprising me & the rest kept us just as hooked, fleeting visits upstairs for chat & odd boogie to a classic or two but was boiling due to fan problems. So 2:30am after an "Overdose of joy" a wobble back to our "Penthouse room"before force feeding brekkies down at 9am.
Down to confess our sins at "Tamla Tabernacle" to Rev R together with Jonah,Rachel & Pete & various other sinners throughout the morning. After cleansing the Soul it was "El Collapso" on the bed till the "Rattle" kicked in shortly after 6pm, so Sh*t,Shave & Shower, into bar for a livener, blow me there's a queue outside, that how strong the addiction becomes, once inside it's Deja Vue. Spent a little time upstairs & managed to catch all of John Pooles set, which I totally enjoyed, but the place for me again was "The Vault's", good spots from all Jock's, specially enjoyed Steve Austin & Rob Kay's but "King of the Hill" was, for me anyway, without doubt the "Oldest swinger in town", Soul Sam, he had the place bouncing for the last hour or so & even a number of the Oldies patrol stayed on & had a dance, now that is saying something!!! So yet again a total overdose Deirdre.
Sunday we managed to muster up some willpower & after tea & toast we headed for the safety of our home, nothing to do with being totally Bo**oxed or Gail being, erh "Fragile". So as you can see "Dear Deirdre", although we try I'm afraid we're totally addicted & have already booked for June & Sept, so any worthwhile advice & words of wisdom would be most graciously accepted.

Take care, be safe & remember ,"It's a long way to Skeggy'rary,it's a long way to go",
Spot.

G'Day Dave and Donna, From all the positive feedback it sounds like the weekender went off like a two bob watch. Never expected to hear any different, congrats to you both. Really looking forward to seeing you all in September and spinning some crucial sounds for the dancers. Promise to bring the sunshine agen. Am fattening up Skippy number two but he's getting worried your gonna auction him off like his brother 2007.
Would we do that?????????? Yep too right we would. It's gonna be a blast mate.
